How this works: the bearing is calculated from your device's GPS coordinates to the Kaaba's coordinates (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E) using the great-circle initial bearing formula — no external API is used for this calculation. On a phone with a built-in compass sensor and a browser that grants access to it, the dial rotates live as you turn; otherwise, the number shown is your bearing from true North, which you can match using any compass app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the compass not rotate as I turn my phone?
Live compass rotation needs your device's motion/orientation sensor, which some browsers (especially on iPhone) only expose after you tap "Enable Live Compass" and grant permission, and which some devices or browsers don't expose to websites at all. Either way, the Bearing number shown is always accurate — you can face that many degrees from North using any separate compass if the live dial isn't available.
How accurate is the distance and direction?
The calculation uses your device's GPS coordinates and standard great-circle formulas (the same math real navigation systems use), so it's as accurate as your device's GPS fix — typically within a few meters outdoors, less precise indoors.
Is my location saved or shared anywhere?
No — your coordinates are used only in your browser for the bearing/distance calculation, plus a single one-time lookup to show your city name. Nothing about your location is stored on our server.
